Advisory: Cancel Where You Subscribed

You can only stop billing on the platform you originally paid on. If you subscribed inside an app, cancelling on the website won't stop the charge — and vice versa. Watch out for retention “dark patterns” too: keep going until you see a clear “Cancellation Confirmed” screen and a confirmation email.

Refunds

How to Get a Mailchimp Refund If You Were Already Charged

Mailchimp does not issue refunds for previously billed charges. Their policy explicitly states no refunds except for system malfunctions or wrongful account termination.

Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid the next charge.

Renew Reminder warns you up to 14 days before your next renewal — so you never have to chase a refund again.

Aftermath

What Happens After Cancelling Mailchimp?

If you downgrade to the free plan, your account remains active with reduced limits (250 contacts, 500 emails/month). Your existing contacts, templates, and campaign history are preserved up to those limits.

If you pause, your account is frozen — no emails can be sent, but your data is kept. You can reactivate at any time.

If you delete, everything is permanently gone within 30 days — contacts, campaigns, templates, automations, reports, and your account itself. This cannot be undone.

Alternative Solutions

Mailchimp Alternatives Worth Considering

For email marketing, Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) offers a free tier with 300 emails/day and unlimited contacts. ConvertKit (free up to 300 subscribers) is popular for creators. Mailerlite (free up to 1,000 subscribers) is a strong budget alternative.

For basic newsletters, Substack and Buttondown are free platforms that monetize through paid subscriptions rather than software fees.

Pre-Cancellation Review

Before You Cancel — Things to Consider

  • Export your data first. Before cancelling or deleting, export your contact lists (Audience → All contacts → Export audience) and campaign reports. Deleting your account is permanent — all contacts, campaigns, templates, and analytics are permanently destroyed.
  • Pause vs. Downgrade vs. Delete. Mailchimp offers three options: (1) Downgrade to the free plan — keeps your data and account, limited to 250 contacts and 500 emails/month. (2) Pause — stops billing and locks your account, but preserves data for when you return. (3) Delete — permanently destroys everything. Choose carefully.
  • Cancel 24 hours before billing. Mailchimp does not refund charges already processed. Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date.
  • Connected integrations. If you have Mailchimp connected to your website, e-commerce store, or other tools, those integrations will stop working. Update your forms and automations before cancelling.
