1

Go to https://slack.com/help/articles/218915077 which is Slack's official help page for deactivating a workspace. While this article mainly focuses on deactivation, it's a necessary first step towards managing subscriptions. If you intend to cancel a paid plan, you need to be an admin or owner of the workspace.

2

Log in to the Slack workspace you wish to cancel. You will need to be an Owner or Admin to access billing settings and initiate cancellation.

3

Click on your workspace name in the top left corner of the Slack application or web interface → Select 'Settings & administration' ⚙️ → Click on 'Workspace settings'.

4

On the workspace settings page, navigate to 'Billing' 💳 or 'Manage subscriptions'. You might need to click on a 'Billing' tab if one is present.

5

Under the billing section, look for options related to 'Change Plan' or 'Cancel Subscription'. If you are on a paid plan, there should be a direct option to downgrade to the free plan or cancel your subscription. Select the option to cancel.

6

Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm your cancellation. Slack may present a retention offer, such as pausing your subscription or offering a discount. To proceed with cancellation, decline these offers and ensure you choose the option that unequivocally cancels your paid plan.

7

Confirm your cancellation one final time. You should receive an email confirmation from Slack regarding the successful cancellation of your paid subscription. Keep this email for your records.

Advisory: Cancel Where You Subscribed

You can only stop billing on the platform you originally paid on. If you subscribed inside an app, cancelling on the website won't stop the charge — and vice versa. Watch out for retention “dark patterns” too: keep going until you see a clear “Cancellation Confirmed” screen and a confirmation email.

Aftermath

What Happens After Cancelling Slack?

Upon cancelling your paid Slack plan, your workspace will typically revert to the free plan at the end of your current billing cycle. You will retain access to the workspace and its remaining features under the free tier until that time. Billing will cease immediately for the next cycle, meaning you will not incur further charges. Data retention under the free plan is limited; free workspaces retain access to the last 90 days of message history and a certain amount of file storage. Full deactivation of a workspace, which is different from cancelling a paid plan, can lead to permanent data loss for all members.

Alternative Solutions

Slack Alternatives Worth Considering

If Slack's paid features are no longer essential, reverting to their free plan is a viable alternative, offering basic chat functionality for small teams. However, for more robust communication needs, alternatives like Microsoft Teams provide similar features, often integrated with other Microsoft 365 services, potentially reducing overall software costs if you already use their ecosystem. Discord offers excellent voice and text chat features, especially popular with communities and smaller, more informal teams, and its free tier is quite generous.

Pre-Cancellation Review

Before You Cancel — Things to Consider

  • Export any important data, files, or message history you wish to retain from your Slack workspace. While some data might remain on the free plan, a full cancellation could result in data loss.
  • Inform your workspace members about the upcoming cancellation. This allows them to download any necessary information or prepare for a transition to another communication method.
  • Understand that cancelling your paid plan will likely revert your workspace to the free plan. This means a reduction in features, storage, and message history access.
  • Verify your billing cycle. If you are on a monthly plan ($8.75/month), cancellation will typically be effective at the end of your current billing period, and you will not be charged for the next cycle.
