Advisory: Cancel Where You Subscribed

You can only stop billing on the platform you originally paid on. If you subscribed inside an app, cancelling on the website won't stop the charge — and vice versa. Watch out for retention “dark patterns” too: keep going until you see a clear “Cancellation Confirmed” screen and a confirmation email.

Refunds

How to Get a Refund From Zoom If You Were Already Charged

Zoom's general policy is that charges are non-refundable once processed. If you were charged for an accidental renewal, contact Zoom's billing support through the Zoom Virtual Agent at support.zoom.com. They may consider exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

Charged for something you forgot?

Renew Reminder warns you up to 14 days before your next renewal — so you never have to chase a refund again.

What Happens After Cancelling Zoom?

After cancelling, your paid features remain active until the end of your billing period. After that, your account automatically downgrades to the free Basic plan.

On the Basic plan: group meetings are limited to 40 minutes, you get 100-participant capacity, and cloud recording stops. Existing cloud recordings are accessible for 30 days, then permanently deleted.

Your Zoom account, meeting history, contacts, and settings are preserved on the free plan.

Alternative Solutions

Zoom Alternatives Worth Considering

Zoom Basic (free) covers most personal meeting needs with 40-minute group meetings and unlimited 1-on-1 calls.

Google Meet (free with a Google account) offers 60-minute group meetings for up to 100 participants. Microsoft Teams (free tier) offers 60-minute group meetings for up to 100 participants and integrates with Microsoft 365. Webex (free tier) offers 40-minute meetings for up to 100 participants.

Pre-Cancellation Review

Before You Cancel — Things to Consider

  • Download cloud recordings. Cloud recordings are permanently deleted 30 days after your paid plan ends. Download any recordings you want to keep before cancelling: zoom.us → Recordings → Cloud Recordings → Download.
  • Free plan is fully functional. After cancelling, your account downgrades to the free Basic plan: 100-participant meetings, 40-minute group meeting limit, unlimited 1-on-1 meetings. This is sufficient for most personal and small-team use.
  • Check for add-ons. If you have additional Zoom add-ons (Zoom Phone, Zoom Rooms, large meeting capacity), each must be cancelled separately.
  • Consider monthly billing. If you are on an annual plan and want to cancel mid-term, you may still be charged for the remaining months depending on your contract terms.
