Use Renew Reminder from Claude, ChatGPT and Codex
Renew Reminder is an MCP server. Add it as a connector once, sign in, and your assistant can answer “what renews this month?”, total up what you spend, and add a subscription from a receipt you paste in — against your own account, with permissions you can take back at any time.
Included with Premium
Connecting an assistant needs Premium on your own account. On the free plan, the sign-in screen offers an upgrade instead of an Allow button. See pricing.
What it is
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is how AI assistants talk to outside tools. Renew Reminder speaks it at one URL. You add that URL to your assistant, it opens a Renew Reminder sign-in page, you approve, and from then on it can call the tools listed below as you.
https://api.renewreminder.com/mcpAvailable with Premium. There is nothing to install and no key to copy — every client below signs in through the same page, and every connection shows up under Settings → AI apps where you can disconnect it.
Claude (claude.ai, desktop and mobile)
- 1Open Settings → Connectors (under Customize) and choose Add custom connector.
- 2Name it Renew Reminder and paste https://api.renewreminder.com/mcp as the URL. Leave the OAuth client fields empty.
- 3Click Connect. A Renew Reminder page opens; sign in if asked and press Allow.
- 4Ask Claude something like “What renews in the next two weeks?” The connector is on for every conversation where you enable it.
Claude Code
Add the server once, then authenticate from inside a session.
claude mcp add --transport http renew-reminder https://api.renewreminder.com/mcpIn Claude Code run /mcp, pick renew-reminder and choose Authenticate. Your browser opens the approval page; after you allow, Claude Code is connected and the tools appear in that session.
Sign-in is the only way in. The connector refuses API keys: they belong to a Business workspace and work only with the REST API, while the connector works on your own account. If you added the server earlier with an Authorization header, remove it with claude mcp remove renew-reminder, add it again with the command above, and authenticate.
ChatGPT
Custom connectors in ChatGPT require Developer mode, which OpenAI makes available on Pro, Team, Enterprise and Edu plans.
- 1Open Settings → Connectors → Advanced and turn on Developer mode.
- 2Back in Connectors choose Create, name it Renew Reminder, paste https://api.renewreminder.com/mcp and select OAuth for authentication.
- 3Save, then sign in and press Allow on the Renew Reminder page that opens.
- 4Enable the connector in a chat, or in Deep research — it provides the search and fetch tools that research runs on.
Codex
codex mcp add renew-reminder --url https://api.renewreminder.com/mcpCodex signs in through the same approval page the first time it needs the server. Other MCP clients (Cursor, Windsurf, an MCP Inspector) work the same way: give them the URL, pick OAuth, approve once.
What it can do
The assistant sees these tools and chooses among them; you never call them by name unless you want to.
| Tool | Needs | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| list_subscriptions | read | Your subscriptions, bills and investments, filterable and paginated. |
| get_subscription | read | One record with every field. |
| upcoming_renewals | read | What is due in the next N days, soonest first. |
| spending_summary | read | Monthly recurring spend by currency and category — your share of split costs. |
| list_categories | read | Your category names. |
| list_payment_accounts | read | The cards and accounts you pay from (last four digits only). |
| get_profile | read | Your name, account currency, timezone and plan. |
| search / fetch | read | The two tools ChatGPT's deep research uses to look things up. |
| add_subscription | write | Add a subscription or bill. Goes through the same path as the app's Add form. |
| update_subscription | write | Change amount, cycle, next billing date, category, notes and so on. |
| cancel_subscription | write | Mark a record inactive. Nothing is ever deleted; pass reactivate to undo. |
| mark_paid | write | Record a payment; advances the next billing date and logs a transaction. |
| add_payment_account | write | Add a card, bank account or wallet. |
Amounts are always the full charge; totals are your own share of anything you split. Records are kept in your account currency — if you tell the assistant a price in another currency it is not saved: the assistant asks what you actually paid in your account currency and records that. Nothing is ever converted.
Permissions and privacy
read
See your subscriptions, bills, renewals, spending and payment accounts.
write
Add and update subscriptions, mark bills paid and add payment accounts.
- A connection can never delete a record, change your email, alerts or billing, or sign in as you anywhere.
- It cannot see bank credentials, and it is never given the names or contact details of people you split costs with.
- Each assistant gets its own connection. Disconnect any of them from Settings → AI apps; it takes effect immediately.
- What your assistant does with the data it reads is governed by that assistant’s own privacy terms, not ours.
Troubleshooting
- “Couldn’t reach the server” while connecting
- Check the URL is exactly https://api.renewreminder.com/mcp — no trailing slash, https, the /mcp path included.
- The connection is refused after you gave the app an API key
- The connector does not accept API keys. Remove the key, token or header from the app’s settings and connect with OAuth instead.
- The approval page says the request expired
- Approvals are valid for ten minutes. Start the connection again from the assistant.
- Every tool answers that you need to upgrade
- The connection is fine; your account is not on Premium right now, either because Premium lapsed or because you are on the free plan. Upgrade to Premium and try again — no need to reconnect.
- The assistant says it lacks “write” access
- That client asked for read-only access when it connected. Disconnect it in Settings → AI apps and connect again.
- You disconnected an app but it still answers
- It cannot — the next call it makes is refused. What you may be seeing is the assistant answering from earlier in the same conversation.
Building your own client? The server follows the MCP authorization spec (OAuth 2.1, PKCE, dynamic client registration and client ID metadata documents). Discovery starts at https://api.renewreminder.com/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp.
