How to cancel a HubSpot subscription

A paid HubSpot subscription renews on its own at the end of each term. To stop it, you turn off auto-renewal in Account & Billing before the term ends. Here is how, from HubSpot's own help center and terms.

The short answer

  • Where: Account & Billing, then the Subscriptions tab, then Cancel auto-renewal.
  • Who: HubSpot says Super Admins or users with billing admin permissions can turn off auto-renewal.
  • By when: before the end of your current term.
  • What it does: the subscription ends on your renewal date, not straight away, and you are charged until the end of the commitment term.

The deadline

HubSpot's Customer Terms of Service say that, unless your order says otherwise, a subscription renews automatically for the shorter of the same length as the term before or one year. To stop that, the terms say:

“…if you decide that you do not want your subscription to automatically renew, you must turn off the auto-renewal setting in the Account & Billing section of your HubSpot account prior to the end of your Current Term. If you do not turn off the auto-renewal setting in the Account & Billing section of your HubSpot account, your Subscription will renew automatically.”

So the last day to cancel is the last day of your current term. Don't leave it to that day: the setting is the notice, and once the term has renewed, the terms don't let you cancel before the end of the new one.

Other dates worth knowing

  • Price increases. HubSpot may raise the price at renewal, up to its list price, and says it will tell you at least 30 days before the renewal. If you don't agree, the way out is the same: turn off auto-renewal before the term ends.
  • Downgrades. A move to a lower tier is not done with this setting. HubSpot asks you to contact a HubSpot representative at least five business days before your renewal date.
  • Renewal emails. HubSpot emails the account's primary contact and billing contacts when a renewal is coming, or up to three Super Admins if there are no billing contacts. If those people have left, nobody may see it.

Turn off auto-renewal

You need to be a Super Admin, or have billing admin permissions.

  1. In your HubSpot account, click your account name in the top right corner, then click Account & Billing.
  2. Click the Subscriptions tab.
  3. In the Auto-Renewal Terms section, click Cancel auto-renewal.
  4. Select which products you want to cancel. To cancel all subscriptions, select all products.
  5. Click Next, select a cancellation reason, then click Next again.
  6. Review the cancellation details, then click Cancel auto-renewal.

HubSpot then sends a notice of non-renewal to the account's billing admin, with the commitment term and the date the cancellation takes effect. Keep that email: it is your proof.

Changed your mind? Before the cancellation date, go back to the Subscriptions tab in Account & Billing and click Turn auto-renewal on. HubSpot notes that this turns auto-renewal back on for every canceled product.

What happens after

  • You keep paying to the end of the term. HubSpot doesn't allow cancellations in the middle of a contract. In its own example, a 12-month contract canceled after eight months is still charged until the end of the 12 months.
  • No refund of prepaid fees. The terms say HubSpot will not refund prepaid or unused subscription fees through the end of the current term.
  • Free tools afterwards. After the cancellation date, the account is downgraded to HubSpot's free tools. You can delete the account once no subscription is still active.

Before the term ends, check with HubSpot what you will keep on the free tools, and export anything you need.

When these steps don't apply

  • Your order form says something else. HubSpot's renewal and notice terms apply “unless otherwise specified” in your order. If you signed an order form with a sales rep, read its renewal section first.
  • You are a HubSpot Solutions Partner. HubSpot asks partners to contact their HubSpot team about changes to a subscription.
  • You only use the free tools. There is nothing to cancel; you can delete the account.
