On the Web / Desktop

1

Go to https://github.com and log in to your account if prompted.

2

Click on your profile picture 👤 in the top right corner of the page → Select 'Settings' ⚙️ from the dropdown menu.

3

On the left sidebar, locate and click on 'Billing and plans' 💳, then select 'Plans and usage'.

4

Under 'Your plan', you will see your current GitHub Pro subscription. Click on 'Downgrade or cancel'.

5

GitHub will present information about downgrading to a Free plan. Scroll down and click 'Continue downgrading'. You may be asked why you are canceling; select an option or skip it.

6

Acknowledge the implications of downgrading (e.g., loss of private repositories in organizations, features). Read carefully and then click 'Continue to downgrade' again to confirm.

7

Finally, confirm your decision by clicking 'Downgrade Plan'. You will receive a confirmation email shortly.

Advisory: Cancel Where You Subscribed

You can only stop billing on the platform you originally paid on. If you subscribed inside an app, cancelling on the website won't stop the charge — and vice versa. Watch out for retention “dark patterns” too: keep going until you see a clear “Cancellation Confirmed” screen and a confirmation email.

Aftermath

What Happens After Cancelling GitHub Pro?

Upon successful cancellation, your GitHub Pro subscription will remain active until the end of your current billing period. At the start of the next billing cycle, your account will automatically revert to the GitHub Free plan. You will no longer be charged. Data associated with repositories will generally remain, though private repositories in organizations will change status as per the terms of the Free plan. Personal private repositories (not tied to an organization) are retained on the Free plan. Features exclusive to Pro, such as GitHub Codespaces usage beyond the Free tier, will cease to be available.

Alternative Solutions

GitHub Pro Alternatives Worth Considering

Consider self-hosting your code if you require more control and wish to avoid subscription fees, using solutions like GitLab Community Edition or Gitea. Alternatively, if your professional needs are minimal, ensure you are leveraging the full capabilities of the free GitHub plan, which offers unlimited public and private repositories, as well as essential collaboration features. For teams requiring advanced features but at a lower cost, some users opt for cheaper cloud-based Version Control Systems like Bitbucket, which can offer compelling pricing for smaller teams.

Pre-Cancellation Review

Before You Cancel — Things to Consider

  • Ensure all private repositories you wish to keep in organizations are either made public or transferred to individual accounts, as private repositories in organizations are a paid feature.
  • If you are an organization owner, understand that downgrading to a Free plan means all your organization's private repositories will become public, or you will lose access.
  • Back up any critical data, code, or project information stored exclusively within GitHub Pro features not available on the Free plan.
  • Check your billing cycle. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period, so you will retain Pro features until then.
