How to Cancel Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo does not offer refunds for Nintendo Switch Online memberships. Once purchased, the membership runs until its expiration date regardless of whether you turn off auto-renewal.

If you were charged for an accidental renewal and contact Nintendo Support immediately (support.nintendo.com or call 1-800-255-3700), they may offer a one-time exception — but this is not guaranteed and depends on the support agent.

Nintendo Support hours are 6 AM – 7 PM Pacific, 7 days a week.

After turning off auto-renewal, your membership stays active until the end of the period you already paid for. You will not be charged again.

When the membership expires:
• Online multiplayer stops working for games that require it (Splatoon, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., etc.).
• The NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Expansion Pack retro game libraries become inaccessible.
• Cloud save data is retained for approximately 180 days, then permanently deleted.
• Any DLC obtained through the Expansion Pack (Animal Crossing HHP, Mario Kart Booster) becomes inaccessible unless you purchase it separately.

You can resubscribe at any time through the eShop or accounts.nintendo.com.

If you primarily play single-player games, you may not need Nintendo Switch Online at all — most single-player games save locally and do not require a membership.

For retro gaming specifically, many classic NES, SNES, and N64 titles are available on other platforms. Xbox Game Pass ($9.99–$14.99/mo) includes a much larger library of modern and retro games across console and PC.

If online play is your main reason, the Standard Individual plan at $19.99/year ($1.67/mo effective) is one of the cheapest online gaming subscriptions available — significantly cheaper than PlayStation Plus ($59.99/yr) or Xbox Game Pass Core ($59.99/yr).

• Cancel at least 48 hours before your renewal date. Nintendo requires this buffer for the change to take effect. Check your renewal date in the eShop under your profile → Nintendo Switch Online.
• Cloud saves are not deleted immediately. After your membership expires, your cloud save data is retained for approximately 180 days (6 months). If you resubscribe within that window, your saves are restored. After 180 days, they are permanently deleted.
• Family plan organizers: if you are the admin of a Family membership, turning off auto-renewal ends access for all members (up to 8 accounts) when the plan expires. Inform your family members before cancelling.
• Consider downgrading instead. If you have the Expansion Pack but only use online play, switching to the Standard plan at renewal ($19.99/yr individual vs. $49.99/yr) saves money while keeping core features.
• Price increase coming Sept 2026 (US). Nintendo has announced price adjustments for online services starting September 1, 2026. If you plan to keep the service, consider renewing before the increase takes effect.
