Go to https://substack.com and log in to your account if you haven't already.
Click on your profile picture 👤 in the top right corner of the screen.
From the dropdown menu, select 'Settings' ⚙️.
On the Settings page, navigate to the 'Subscriptions' 📝 tab in the left-hand sidebar.
Locate the specific publication you wish to cancel under 'My paid subscriptions' and click the 'Cancel' button next to it.
Substack may present a retention offer, such as pausing your subscription or offering a discount. Ignore these and click 'Continue to Cancel' or 'Cancel subscription' to proceed.
You might be asked for a reason for cancellation. Select an option from the list or provide feedback if you wish, then confirm your decision.
A confirmation message will appear, and you will receive an email confirming that your subscription has been canceled. Keep this email for your records.
You can only stop billing on the platform you originally paid on. If you subscribed inside an app, cancelling on the website won't stop the charge — and vice versa. Watch out for retention “dark patterns” too: keep going until you see a clear “Cancellation Confirmed” screen and a confirmation email.
Upon cancellation, your paid subscription to the specific Substack publication will remain active until the end of your current billing period. You will not be charged again. Once the current period concludes, you will lose access to all subscriber-only content for that publication. Any data associated with your free subscription (if you continue to receive free posts) will remain; however, your paid subscriber data will be marked as inactive.
