Advisory: Cancel Where You Subscribed

You can only stop billing on the platform you originally paid on. If you subscribed inside an app, cancelling on the website won't stop the charge — and vice versa. Watch out for retention “dark patterns” too: keep going until you see a clear “Cancellation Confirmed” screen and a confirmation email.

Refunds

How to Get a Refund From Audible If You Were Already Charged

Audible membership fees are non-refundable, and they do not issue partial refunds or prorate your monthly billing cycle. Your cancellation stops the next billing charge from happening.

If you made an accidental purchase or return, or if you were billed for an unwanted renewal, you can reach out to Audible customer service. Go to audible.com/contactus to start a live chat or request a callback. If you explain that the renewal was unintentional and you haven't used any credits or listened to any books since the charge, support will often issue a refund as a one-time courtesy.

If you return a book you bought with a credit, the credit is immediately returned to your account. Note that book returns are restricted to active members and subject to abuse limits.

Charged for something you forgot?

Renew Reminder warns you up to 14 days before your next renewal — so you never have to chase a refund again.

What Happens After Cancelling Audible?

After cancelling, your membership benefits will continue until the end of your current billing cycle. During this time, you can still listen to the Audible Plus Catalog if your subscription included it. Once the cycle ends, you will lose access to the Plus Catalog, and any unused credits will disappear.

However, any audiobooks you bought with credits or cash remain yours forever. You can log in to Audible with your Amazon credentials at any time, even years from now, to download, stream, or re-listen to your purchased library.

If you paused your membership, billing and credit delivery will stop for the selected duration (30, 60, or 90 days). Your account will automatically resume and bill your payment method at the end of the pause window.

Alternative Solutions

Audible Alternatives Worth Considering

If you are looking for free audiobook alternatives, Libby and Hoopla are library-connected services that let you borrow audiobooks and ebooks using a local library card. Spotify Premium ($16.99/mo) also includes 15 hours of audiobook listening per month from their catalog of over 250,000 titles.

For paid subscription alternatives, Scribd (Everand) offers unlimited access to a rotating catalog of audiobooks and ebooks for $14.99/mo. Chirp Audiobooks offers no monthly fees and features heavy discounts on individual audiobook purchases that you own forever.

Pre-Cancellation Review

Before You Cancel — Things to Consider

  • Spend all remaining credits first. Once you cancel your membership, any unused credits expire immediately and cannot be recovered. Spend them on any audiobook before cancelling — those books are yours to keep forever.
  • Pause your membership instead of cancelling. If you just have too many credits or want to save money, you can pause your membership for 30, 60, or 90 days once every 12 months. You keep all your credits and can still spend them during the pause.
  • Downgrade your plan. If the $14.95/mo Premium Plus plan is too expensive, you can switch to the $7.95/mo Audible Plus plan. This gives you unlimited streaming of the Plus Catalog without receiving a monthly credit.
  • Keep your purchased books. Any audiobooks you bought using credits or money are yours permanently. You will not lose access to them after you cancel; they remain in your library to download and listen to anytime.
