1

Identify your home club — the exact Planet Fitness location you signed up at. It is the only club that can process an in-person or mailed cancellation. Other locations and corporate cannot do it for you, even with a Black Card.

2

Gather your account details: your full name, the address, phone, and email on the membership, and your membership ID (it's on your keytag and in the PF app under your check-in barcode).

3

Check the billing calendar before you act. Monthly dues draft on the 17th, and your home club must receive notice by the 10th to stop that month's charge (allow up to 7 business days). To avoid the separate $49 annual fee, your request must be received by the 25th of the month before it's due.

4

Try online first if your club supports it: sign in at planetfitness.com/login, go to My Account → Membership (or Billing Info), and click Cancel Membership. You'll choose a reason, review any final charges, confirm, and get a confirmation email. This rolled out to many U.S. clubs in 2025 but isn't available everywhere — if the button doesn't appear, your club hasn't enabled it, so use one of the next two methods.

5

Cancel in person: go to your home club, ask the front desk for a cancellation form, fill it out, and ask for a printed copy or receipt confirming the cancellation.

6

Or cancel by mail: send a short signed letter to your home club's street address by USPS Certified Mail with return receipt. State clearly that you are cancelling, and include your full name, address, phone, email, and membership ID.

7

Get proof in writing — the in-person receipt, the certified-mail return receipt, or the online confirmation email. Planet Fitness routinely disputes cancellations that members can't document.

8

Watch your bank or card statement for the next one to two cycles to confirm the monthly dues and the annual fee have actually stopped.

Advisory: Cancel Where You Subscribed

You can only stop billing on the platform you originally paid on. If you subscribed inside an app, cancelling on the website won't stop the charge — and vice versa. Watch out for retention “dark patterns” too: keep going until you see a clear “Cancellation Confirmed” screen and a confirmation email.

Refunds

How to Get a Planet Fitness Refund If You Were Already Charged

Planet Fitness monthly dues and the annual fee are generally non-refundable — cancelling stops future billing rather than refunding what you've already paid, and you keep access until the end of the current period. There are still a few situations where you can get money back.

If you were charged after you had already cancelled, that's the strongest case. Contact your home club (not corporate) with your proof — the certified-mail return receipt, a signed in-person cancellation form, or the online confirmation email — and ask them to reverse the charge. Clubs will refund dues or an annual fee billed after a documented cancellation, but only if you can show the request was received before the deadline.

If the club refuses and you have clear proof the charge came after a valid cancellation, dispute it with your card issuer as a last resort. Bring your cancellation receipt to the dispute. Avoid using a chargeback while you still have an active, un-cancelled membership — the club can send the balance to collections.

What Happens After Cancelling Planet Fitness?

Your membership stays active until the end of the billing period you've already paid for — you keep gym access until then, and cancelling does not refund the current month's dues. Once the cancellation is processed (instant in person, up to 7 business days by mail), no further monthly dues should draft on the 17th.

Keep your proof of cancellation until you've seen at least one clean statement. The single most common Planet Fitness complaint is being billed after cancelling because the club has no record of the request — a certified-mail return receipt or a signed in-person form is what gets those charges reversed. If the $49 annual fee still posts after you cancelled ahead of the deadline, contact your home club with your proof and ask them to reverse it.

Alternative Solutions

Planet Fitness Alternatives Worth Considering

If it's the price you're rethinking rather than the gym itself, ask your home club to switch a Black Card membership ($24.99/mo) down to the Classic plan ($15/mo), or to freeze the membership for a few months instead of cancelling outright — freezing avoids paying a new enrollment fee to rejoin later.

If you're leaving for another gym, the closest budget alternatives are Crunch Fitness and YouFit (similar low-cost, month-to-month plans), while a local independent gym or a YMCA often has friendlier, no-contract cancellation terms. For home workouts, an app-based option like Peloton App or Apple Fitness+ cancels online in seconds with no home-club visit or certified letter required.

Pre-Cancellation Review

Before You Cancel — Things to Consider

  • Know the billing dates. Monthly dues hit on the 17th, and your club must receive your request by the 10th (with up to 7 business days to process). Miss that window and you pay for one more month.
  • Dodge the $49 annual fee. It's separate from your monthly dues and catches most people off guard. Your cancellation must be received by the 25th of the month before the annual fee posts.
  • Check for a minimum term. If you signed a 12-month commitment (common with Black Card promotions) and leave early, you owe a $58 buyout fee — unless you qualify for a waiver (see the FAQ).
  • You can only cancel at your home club. A different Planet Fitness location cannot do it — even with a Black Card — and corporate will redirect you back to your club.
  • Consider freezing instead of cancelling. Planet Fitness lets you put a membership on hold for a small monthly fee, which can beat cancelling and later re-paying a $0–$59 enrollment fee to rejoin.
