Track a free trial
Record the trial end date, not the signup date, and give yourself enough notice to actually cancel.
A free trial is the highest-value thing to track, because it converts silently. The provider is not going to remind you.
- 1Add the service as a subscription.
- 2Set the next renewal date to the day the trial ends — the day you would first be charged, not the day you signed up.
- 3Enter the price you will be charged after the trial. That is the number that matters.
- 4Set the advance notice to at least 3 days on this record, so you have a working day to cancel.
Finding the trial end date
The signup confirmation email almost always states it. Failing that, count forward from your signup date by the trial length — a 7-day trial started on the 3rd charges on the 10th. When in doubt, set the date a day early. Being reminded one day too soon costs nothing; one day late costs the subscription.
Some providers charge at the *start* of the day the trial ends, in their own time zone, not yours. Never leave a trial cancellation to the final morning.
