Set a budget
Give a category, or the whole month, a spending limit and get an email before you go over it.
A budget is a monthly limit, for one category or for everything. The renewals and bills you track count towards it by themselves, so you can see what the month has already cost and what is still to come before it lands.
Budgets are in the web app now, and come to the phone app with its next update. They are free on every plan.
Set one
- 1Open Budgets in the sidebar of the web app.
- 2For a limit on the whole month, choose Set a monthly budget. For one category, choose Set budget beside it under No budget set.
- 3Enter the Monthly limit. For a category, pick its group: Fixed, Flexible or Non-monthly.
- 4If you like, turn on Roll unspent money over: what you do not spend this month is added to next month's limit.
- 5Choose Save. The limit applies to this month and every month after it until you change it.
Starting from nothing? Auto-budget gives every category with recent spending a limit based on your average over the last few complete months. It skips any category that already has a budget, so it never changes one you set.
What counts
- Spent so far: charges that have already happened this month.
- Still to come: renewals due later this month, and bills that are due and not yet paid.
- A yearly charge counts in full in the month it lands, not as a twelfth of it.
- With a bank linked (Premium), your card spending counts too, and a charge the bank already shows is not counted twice.
- On a split subscription, only your share counts.
Budget alerts
We email you when a budget reaches 80% and again at 100%, each at most once a month. The email gives what is already spent and what is still to come separately, so a month that has not happened yet never reads as money already gone. To stop them, turn off Budget alerts on the Reminders page of the web app.
The alerts go to your reminder email address, so email reminders need to be on. If push notifications are on too, your phone gets the alert as well.
In a business workspace, the workspace's Admins set its budgets and get the alerts by email. Every member can see them.
